Here at Blue Dog Pro Painters, we often encounter clients and homeowners who have a big question about the painting process: Is one coat of paint enough? It can be a difficult question to answer, as there are many different factors that come into play that are unique to every individual space. So, we are going to take a deep dive and try our best to answer this question for all circumstances.

Is One Coat of Paint Enough?

Let’s take a look at some of the factors that make a big difference in the amount of paint that you use:

New Color

One of the most common misconceptions is that using a darker color on your wall will hide the layer underneath better than a lighter color. However, it may surprise you that the opposite is actually true. Darker colors have less “body”, meaning that you will have to use two or more coats of paint during application.

If your existing paint is a semi-gloss or a satin, there’s a good chance that it has a significant amount of sheen. If that is the case, it’s likely that your new paint will slide. This will leave paint streaks, meaning that you will need to repaint with another coat.

The way you apply your paint may affect the amount of coats you need. Brushes push paint away from them which can lead to streaks that will need to be covered up with more paint. Rollers have a similar issue, and are susceptible to sliding when painting over glossier paints and surfaces. Spraying will help you avoid sliding as well as streaks, allowing you to use less paint in the long run. However, it requires expertise and professional equipment to properly apply paint this way.
