When you are painting or repainting a room in your home, you’re going to want to know which type of paint is the best option. So, what’s the difference between matte, satin, and gloss paint? This is a question we get asked every so often at Blue Dog Pro Painters, a residential and commercial painting company in Dallas, TX, so we feel it’s best to go over each option in detail.

What’s The Difference Between Matte, Satin and Gloss Paint?

Matte

Matte Paint

Matte finishes offer a smoothness and subtlety that satin and gloss aren’t capable of providing. This finish is a fantastic choice for ceilings and walls due to its ability to cover up bumps and/or scratches. Another plus is that you can touch up this finish with tremendous ease. However, matte finishes have a reputation for being difficult to clean, as cleaning can potentially remove the finish itself. Because of this, we advise you to refrain from using this finish in bathrooms or kitchens.

Satin

Satin Paint

Satin is known for its silky finish and it’s beautiful sheen. This finish is superior to matte in the sense that it is much more durable during cleaning. Also, satin reflects more light, giving your room more brightness and more heat. We recommend you use satin in areas like kitchens and bathrooms.

Gloss

Glossy Paint

Gloss paint has the brightest sheen of them all, as it reflects the most light. Gloss is extremely durable during cleaning, making it the perfect option for areas that require the most cleaning, such as kitchens and bathrooms. If you are looking for paint for your bathroom, we recommend using a semi-gloss finish. Semi-Gloss is known for its resistance to moisture. The biggest downside of gloss is that it will not cover up any bumps in your walls or ceilings, meaning you will need to properly sand these surfaces to ensure smoothness.
