Spring is fast approaching, meaning that your weekend home improvement projects will soon be on the agenda. You want to paint your garage door but you aren’t sure about how exactly to go about it or what steps need to be taken. You’re in luck, because Blue Dog Pro Painters, a painting company in Dallas, TX, has years of experience with garage door painting and would like to pass our wisdom onto you. Here are some tips for painting garage doors.

Tips for Painting Garage Doors

Start On A Cool Day

The first step in painting your garage door is making sure that the temperature is right. It can be quite difficult to find a cool day here in Dallas, which is why we recommend painting your garage door as soon as you can this spring. The ideal temperature you are looking for is between 50 and 75 degrees Fahrenheit. You are also going to need low humidity and indirect sunlight. If you have a big tree in your front yard, it may be your best friend during this project. It’s important to block out three consecutive days for this project, so make sure you’re on top of those forecasts.

You then must get your materials together. You have to have the right paint and primer for your garage door in order for everything to work properly. Be sure to get an expert opinion from a local hardware store or paint shop about which paints and primer would be best suited for your garage door. For a two car garage, a gallon of paint should suffice. However, if you’re looking to lighten your garage door, you may have to apply more than one coat.

Clean Your Garage Door Beforehand

Like any painting project, prep is key. Put on some protective gear (your gloves, dust mask and safety goggles) and scrub out any rust or chips with a wire brush. To smooth these surfaces out, sand those areas with fine grit sandpaper. Then, use a sponge and an all-purpose cleaner and get that entire garage door nice and clean. Use some towels or rags to dry the surface before letting it air dry for at least an hour.

Don’t Want To Paint It? Then Tape It!

Painting is a precision game, and you don’t need the unnecessary hassle of paint going where you don’t want it. Use heavy duty painters tape to cover any and all handles, locks, and windows. Tape off the edges of the garage if you are going to paint the trim. If you don’t want to paint the trim, tape off the trim. To keep paint from hitting the floor, use drop cloths on the inside and outside of the garage.

Set The Garage Door To Manual

You are going to want to turn off your automatic garage door opener and switch it to manual settings. This will allow you to easily maneuver the garage door while you are painting, making sure that you always keep it at a comfortable and easily accessible height.
